On May 10, the trial of the «Prometeo» operation began, in which a comrade, Natascia, and two comrades, Beppe and Robert, are accused of sending explosive envelopes to the former director of the DAP [Department of Penitentiary Administration], Santi Consolo, and to two Turin prosecutors, Roberto Sparagna and Antonio Rinaudo. The trial is being held before the Court of Appeal of Genoa, as the indictment (art. 280, paragraph 1 and paragraph 3) provides for a sentence starting from 20 years imprisonment. The trial was held by videoconference for the two comrades still locked up, Natascia and Beppe, who «attended» the hearings from the prisons of Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Bologna respectively, through a screen. The trial followed a schedule of two weekly hearings from May 10 to June 2, with a considerable number of ROS [Carabinieri Special Operations Group] and RIS [Carabinieri Scientific Investigations Department] experts summoned as witnesses by the prosecution, represented by prosecutor Federico Manotti and by the civil party of Antonio Rinaudo.
The axis of the prosecution revolves around the testimony of the general of the ROS of Turin Bogliacino, which lasted for two full days and that, rather than talking about concrete facts, focused mainly on ideological issues related to the comrades accused in the process, on their interpersonal relationships and correspondence with the prisoners, on internet searches dating back to 2012 (! ) and that are related to news and public debates in the area and in dialogues of everyday life instrumentally exhumed to reach forced conclusions. The same old script used in similar trials against other comrades: on the other hand, suggestion assumes a fundamental role in a trial against anarchists, even more so if one is in front of a popular jury. For this reason, many words were spent on friendly relations with a comrade who in the past was arrested accused of terrorism and possession of alleged explosive material, and in this wake the ROS has then evoked solidarity with the defendants in the Scripta Manent trial and that directed at another prisoner, to justify the motives and aversions to those who are the offended in this process, the DAP and two MPs involved in the repression of the struggles. As if the same aversion were not shared by almost all rebels, anarchists, antagonists or criminals by necessity or virtue.
The SIF experts themselves did not prove to be so convinced of the lethality of the envelopes in question, and the witness who tried to appear more credible clung to unspecified «experiments conducted by himself in private,» which experiments, moreover, he did not even expose at trial to demonstrate their lethality.
The civil party then named its own list of witnesses to bring to the courtroom, all of the same tenor as those mentioned above, and then brought Rinaudo and his wife in person to the courtroom to narrate their fate as persons persecuted by the dangerous antagonists, also contradicting themselves about the dates of certain alleged intimidations.
The defense intervened through the interrogation of each of the witnesses, the appointment of experts such as the explosives expert and the forensic doctor on the typology of the material, an expert to dismantle certain interceptions that had occurred according to the already consolidated technique of «cut and sew» of the ROS and DIGOS, and finally, an expert to analyze the video that, according to the prosecution, filmed Beppe and Natascia before and after the purchase of the imaginary envelopes. In this regard, it is interesting to note that, according to the prosecution, the store that Beppe and Natascia entered that day was the only one selling that particular type of envelopes in the entire area of Genoa and surroundings (i.e. the only areas where these checks were carried out). Evidently, an investigation by the lawyers was enough to discover that the same identical envelopes were also sold in another store in Genoa and, moreover, at the same identical price indicated above in pencil. As if that were not enough, again thanks to the lawyers’ cross-examinations, it also came to light that the ROS were already aware of this «detail». A «detail» that they deliberately omitted in order to reinforce the prosecution’s fabricated and fanciful house of cards.
During the hearing on July 1, Natascia made a statement about her hunger strike and the condition she is living in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, which in fact prevents her from being able to see her lawyer and loved ones.
On July 2 there was a final statement by the three comrades.
The court postponed the closing of the preliminary investigation until September 20, when the trial will probably be held.
September 27 and 28 will be two days dedicated entirely to the defense, October 19 is the last hearing for possible replies, and then the date of the sentence will have to be set.
In the meantime, Natascia and Beppe are still locked up in prison for more than two years. Natascia has been on hunger strike for 20 days, determined not to eat a single bite as long as she remains in that infamous place that is the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The same infamous place – protagonist of the news these days – where the massacre took place in April 2020 in retaliation to a protest of the prisoners. The same massacre that the media and the institutions seem to notice only these days, but that we know has always been happening systematically, in every prison, in every barracks, in every police station.
All our hatred to those who try to bury our comrades in a cell.
